petition spreading like wildfire online demands that U.S. President Donald Trump be barred from entering Canada because his policies and actions promote hate propaganda.

The petition is a rebuke of Trump’s Executive Order banning Muslims from Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the United States. The order also suspended the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days.

Last week, over 200 law professors from across Canada signed an open letter demanding an immediate suspension of the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, arguing that Trump’s policies and and statements are “inconsistent with international law, in addition to reflecting bigotry, xenophobia and nativist fear-mongering.”

According to the petition:

We, the undersigned concerned Canadians, demand that Donald Trump be prevented from entering into Canada due to his widespread and well-documented hate propaganda against a number of minorities in Canada in direct violation of Canadian Criminal code section 319.

Public incitement of hatred

319. (1) Every one who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of

(a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or

(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Willful promotion of hatred

(2) Every one who, by communicating statements, other than in private conversation, wilfully promotes hatred against any identifiable group is guilty of:

(a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years; or

(b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Under no circumstances should a proponent of hate with such a large following and access to massive financial assets be allowed to enter into our nation where he could possibly influence or found hate groups through funding or endorsement.

As of Monday, February 6, the petition had garnered 32,188 signatures. The target is 35,000 signatures.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who continues to turn the machinery of the Canadian government “toward finding a way to get along” with Trump, is unlikely to yield to the petition’s demands.
