Tuesday August 5, 2014, Vancouver, Coast Salish territories – A group of twenty mothers and families are currently occupying NDP MP Don Davies office in Vancouver in support of Palestine.

According to Martha Roberts who is part of the Mothers and Families for Gaza action in MP Don Davies office, “All around the world, public opinion is against Israel but Canadian politicians have shamefully either cheered on Israeli war crimes or maintained a silence about the escalating human rights violations being committed by Israel.” Since July 8 over 1700 Palestinians have been killed, of whom at least 400 are children. Schools, hospitals, UN shelters, playgrounds, universities, media centers, and vital public utilities have all been targeted in Gaza. The number of displaced persons is at 570,000 people — roughly one-quarter of Gaza’s entire population.

“We are here today because we know that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had already declared Canada as Israel’s best friend and now even the NDP has aligned itself with Israeli war crimes. We demand that all political parties speak out against Israeli war crimes and defend the human rights of Palestinian people,” Roberts further notes.

Children account for 25% of all those killed and 30% of those injured. Children in Gaza have lived all or most of their lives under the Israeli siege that has blocked proper food, medicine, building supplies and other necessities of life from coming in to Gaza. Pierre Krähenbühl, Commissioner General for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugee, has recently called the Israeli shelling of a school “a serious violation of international law by Israeli forces… Children killed in their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced.”

In a letter to Don Davies, the group states, “All of us are local residents and have children, and we believe that your silence is complicity. As mothers and families with children, we mourn for the children of Gaza whose precious lives have been cut short while our children are with us. In your capacity as a Member of Parliament, you must take a stand with your conscience, with or without your party.”
