Green Party leader Elizabeth May is spot on again! She’s demanding that CSIS should weigh in on the Canada-China treaty, due to be ratified by cabinet this week. The Harper Government wants Canadians to believe that the treaty will “address Canada’s trade imbalance with the Asian economic powerhouse.” The truth, as May argued on CTV’s Question Period earlier today, the treaty would undermine Canadian security and sovereignty.

May, the MP for Saanich-Gulf Islands,  rightly argues:

This not only locks in investors from China with the ability to sue Canada, it also puts a positive obligation on the government of Canada to encourage investment from China into Canada and I think I’d like to hear from CSIS before we pass this treaty.

CSIS, Canada’s national intelligence organization, is best placed to advice the country on this thorny issue. It is “dedicated to the protection of Canada’s national security interests and the safety of Canadians“. And, in a recent annual report, the agency warned that foreign takeovers such as the recent Calgary-based energy company Nexen agreement to a takeover by a state-owned Chinese company “can pose a threat to national security” to Canada.
