This might come as a surprise to most Anglophones in Canada and Quebec. But it’s true. Option Nationale, a party unconditionally committed to separating Quebec from Canada, invites Anglophones to help shape the “future” of the province. To help the province “reach its full potential”. The party’s leader, Jean-Martin Aussant, made made the surprise invitation in the YouTube video below, posted to YouTube Sunday.
On the surface, Aussant suggests that an independent Quebec will need Anglophones. And that language minorities “will benefit from a more prosperous Quebec.” Which is strange, considering that the leading seperatist, the Parti Québécoiss, has promised to introduce new and tougher restrictions on the English language if elected. Aussant split from the Parti Québécois and formed Option Nationale’s in 2011.
If Aussant was genuine, he’d be fighting for the English language in Quebec right now. He’d be insisting on English debates during the election. None are currently scheduled.
But even more revealing is this statement by Aussant: “It is time for all Quebecers to build a country of their own, and we all know what it is.”
