There is no planet B 150x150 Activist Communique: The Slackers Guide to Activism—Superhero StyleMy name is Jen, and I’m creating an activist group in vancouver to increase the community’s participation in world issues–such as exposing Monsanto, Arctic drilling by Shell, the impact of Stephen Harper on Canada and the proposed pipelines. Our group plans to bring attention to issues through street performances, music, art and flash mobs. We have the following event coming up:

What: The Slackers Guide to Activism Group—Superhero Style

When: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 @ 8:pm

Where: Boteco (Brazilian Restaurant), 2545 Nanaimo Street, Vancouver

Who (Contacts): Facebook Event Page: The Slackers Guide to Activism—Superhero Style

CALL TO ACTION:

Hello citizens of the world,

On Wednesday July 25 @ approx 8:00 pm @ Boteco, a brazillian restaurant, address— 2545 Nanaimo Street in Vancouver—corner of Nanaimo and Broadway (On Nanaimo, south of Broadway)–the first Slackers Guide to Activism Group—super hero style will be held.

What is the Slackers Guide to Activism Group—super hero style you may ask?

A ragtag DEMOCRATIC group of people like YOU and ME who are interested in getting together to increase our awareness of socio-political issues that impact Canada and the rest of the world. Specifically, I am asking the CS community who are interested in environmental, health and other world issues to come on out for the evening to meet likeminded people.

What if I don’t know anything about anything, or a little of something?

It is OK to not be current on social and political affairs; quite often people want to get involved in community issues, but do not know how and where to start. Well this Slackers group is for you! We don’t know everything either and some of us don’t know anything at all. This group is meant to bring people together from all knowledge bases to share and get more involved in current events.

What is the Slackers group going to do besides getting together for beer, new friendships, and fun times?

Not only will we be getting together—regularly (but slacker style) to explore the issues that are current, our plan is to attract attention to important world events by:

• Actively participating as a group in Flash Mobs in the city of Vancouver to hand out community friendly information that details important issues such as the Enbridge Pipeline that is a 5.5 billion dollar project that runs a pipeline to Kitimat, BC and Kinder-Morgan toVancouver, BC.

• Use our small budget to create catchy t-shirts & bumper stickers available to the public by donation that brings awareness to such issues such as the impact of Arctic Drilling ; HIV Awareness; Supporting Japan say No to Nuclear Power; and bringing attention to Monsanto, a MULTINATONAL agriculture CORPORATION that produces genetically modified food (GMO’s).

• Create Flash Musical Parades to generate community interest and get others involve. Encourage the community to join our parade—and march together in solidarity to show activists and slackers alike that we too can make a difference in numbers.

• Create Community events, such as STREET THEATRE, parties and dances and all around good times to spread the word and get involved.

• YOUR IDEA

Where does the Superhero part come into play?

Oh YAYYY!!! To bring attention, awareness and most importantly FUN—all our community events such as the parade and flash mob will be in superhero style. What does this mean?? Fun times! You get to dress up in fun and wacky costumes as your alter ego to save the world.

A couple of examples of current group members is: Democratus: the Greek God of Democracy; Girl: The girl who wants to save the world to only take it back for her own personal gains; THERE IS NO PLANET B girl; Spiderdude

As a group member you get to dress up (or down) in a costume of your choice and choose your own name and alter-ego. Costumes can be simple (a towel tied around your neck as a cape; body paint) or elaborate (go crazy baby). Costumes are the responsibility of all group members, however we have a silk screening machine available AND i can sew.

We will not be participating in any illegal activities, however we do support activist groups such as Greenpeace, the David Suzuki Foundation, Tar Sand Action, Living Ocean Society, Climate Action Network Canada, Exposing Monsanto, Yinka Dene Alliance, the Sierra Club, Occupy Earth, & Nature Canada to name a few.

As a face book member you can “like” any of the above groups to receive current information on world issues.

We also want to support YOUR ISSUES!

What kind of donations and support do you have right now?

I have some fantastic friends, some fantastic strangers, a restaurant, a Vancouver warehouse space, a silk screening machine, people who can play music, love, support, creativity, spiderdude willing to make cookies and HOPEFULLY YOU.

Meeting will be held after hours @ the restaurant Boteco—no pressure to buy anything, come WHEN YOU CAN…..JUST COME ON OUT to and bring your friends and……….

GET UP, GET INTO IT AND GET INVOLVED (credit to James Brown for that slogan)
