Earlier this week, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Liberals pledged $12 million in tax credits for businesses that hire skilled new Canadians. The pledge seeks to defray costs these businesses incur in hiring and training Ontario-based new Canadian citizens who have been in Canada for less than five years. To enable them to acquire “Canadian experience”.
It’s a noble proposal.
Hudak didn’t just denounce the pledge. He revealed his anti-immigrant, xenophobic strain. He sees the pledge as “affirmative action” for “foreigners.”
Yes, foreigners.
And then, fear-mongering. Hudak claims that the Liberal plan will leave unemployed Ontarians behind. And that the plan says “Ontarians need not apply”.
That’s not what the plan says. One quote:
“We’ll create a tax credit for business to give our highly skilled newcomers the Canadian work experience they need.”
Sounds to me like a subsidy program to encourage job creation for new Canadians.
Ultra Conservatives PM Stephen Harper and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford recently scored in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Hudak will just kissed the immigrant vote in this area goodbye.
