With the launch of HuffPost Canada in Toronto this week, the Huffington Post has made good on its recent promise to launch international editions. And what a fitting tribute to progressive Canadians that the leading American news site and content aggregator should make Canada its first stop.
Arianna Huffington, the HuffPost co-founders and editor-in-chief, sums it all up:
Canadians are no strangers to The Huffington Post: 1.5 million of them visited us in March. So starting our international expansion north of the border was a natural — especially after a survey of our Canadian visitors found that 80 percent would be interested in a Canadian news section and 71 percent would visit the site more often if we covered Canadian news, and provided takes on the hot topics of the day from Canadian voices, some well-known and some we’re excited to introduce you to.
But the HuffPost has landed in Canada at the right time. Fox News North, disguised as Sun TV, recently launched and wasted no time pushing American-style, poisonous propaganda into our airwaves.
The historic May 2 Federal election ushered in a turning point for Canada’s electoral politics. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative majority may be tempted to steer Canada into the far-right abyss. Through HuffPost Canada, social democrats and their progressive allies will fight back with sobriety and educated ideas and opinions.
